Transport a dismantled SMD80 rail renewal machine from the snowy port city of Uddevalla, Sweden (SE-45150) to the sunlit landscapes of Modugno, Italy (IT-70026), via the Port of Bari. The main unit measured an impressive 33.14 x 4.00 x 3.90 meters and weighed in at 111,000 kg—a true heavyweight of railway engineering.
The challenge wasn’t just in the numbers. The SMD80, a marvel of technology capable of simultaneously replacing both rails and sleepers, had been modified so extensively over the years that accurate weight data and lifting schematics were no longer available. The seller had no documentation. And we had no margin for error.
Without official specs, our team jumped into action. We coordinated a preliminary onsite survey in partnership with a local lifting firm.
Under our guidance, each component of the machine was individually weighed using certified hydraulic jacks, generating precise and verifiable weight certificates.
Once the real dimensions were measured, we created a tailor-made lifting plan, selected a suitable vessel, and arranged specialized transport equipment.
On a frigid winter morning in Uddevalla, with temperatures plummeting to -14°C, loading operations began. Thanks to meticulous preparation, a detailed lifting plan, and seamless collaboration with the stevedores, the process was completed swiftly and safely—despite the extreme weather conditions.
Fifteen days later, under the brilliant sun of southern Italy, our vessel docked at the Port of Bari with its cargo intact and special transport vehicles waiting on the quay. Witnessing that smooth landing was a moment of true professional pride.
Projects of this magnitude and complexity leave no room for improvisation. Success hinges on meticulous planning, comprehensive risk analysis, and above all, the experience and expertise of a team that can adapt and respond—even when critical data is missing.
At DCS LIBURNUS PROJECT, our people are trained to see solutions where others see obstacles. Because when the blueprint is missing, experience becomes the only map you need.
